Who is Mahashay Dharampal Gulati?

Mahashay Dharampal Gulati (MDH Spices Owner) was an Indian businessman. He was the owner and CEO of MDH (Mahshian Di Hatti Private Limited), an Indian spice company.

The 98-year-old was the face of the MDH brand. He was also referred to as the “grand old man of spices”. In 2019, the Government of India honored Mr. Gulati with Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian award.

He was born on 27th March 1923 in Sialkot(now in Pakistan). His father was Mahashay Chunni Lal Gulati, the founder of MDH. His family migrated to India during the partition of India. The family spent some time in a refugee camp in Amritsar location, and then they moved to Delhi in search of work.

Once in Delhi, Mr. Gulati opened a spice shop(Mahashian Di Hatti) in Karol Bagh. In 1953, he rented a second shop in Chandni Chowk. In 1959, Mr. Gulati purchased land in Kirti Nagar, New Delhi to set up the manufacturing unit of Mahashian Di Hatti.

Highest-paid FMCG CEO

In 2017, Mr. Gulati was the highest paid FMCG CEO in India. He is a fifth-grade dropout. But his salary in 2017 was over 21 crore, higher than Adi Godrej and Vivek Gambhir of Godrej Consumer, Sanjiv Mehta of Hindustan Unilever and YC Deveshwar of ITC. MDH had posted a net profit of Rs 213 crore while its total revenues were Rs 924 crore last fiscal, according to ET. 

Even in his 90s, Mr. Gulati is not retired. He continues to take business decisions. Mr. Gulati also does charity. MDH Spices Owner, Mr. Gulati donates nearly 90% of his salary to charity under the banner of the Mahashay Chunni Lal Charitable Trust. The Trust operates a 250-bed hospital in Delhi, along with a mobile hospital for slum dwellers and four schools.

Darshan Lal Jain | Indian social activist

Social crusader and RSS veteran Darshan Lal Jain (92) of Jagadhri city in Yamunanagar district received the Padma Bhushan from the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, in New Delhi on Saturday. Jain had worked tirelessly in various fields, especially education for the poor and girls, reestablishing the honour of India’s valiant kings, soldiers and freedom fighters.

He was a founder member of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Jagadhri, established in 1954 and the founder secretary of DAV College for Girls, Yamunanagar, the first girls’ college in the region, in 1957. He had led various organisations such as Bharat Vikas Parishad, Vivekanand Rock Memorial Society, Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Hindu Shiksha Samiti, which is running about 100 schools in Haryana in rural and remote areas, and Geeta Niketan Residential School, Kurukshetra, in different capacities.

He founded Nand Lal Geeta Vidya Mandir at Tepla village in Ambala. The school is imparting free education and boarding facility to poor but intelligent children hailing from Haryana, Northeast and J&K since its inception in 1997.

He also revived Hindu High School at Nuh in Mewat district, which led to the opening of several new schools in the area. He established the Sarasvati Nadi Shodh Sansthan in 1999 and started the Sarasvati Revival Project. Besides, he also formed the Yodha Samarak Samiti in 2007 to commemorate the forgotten heroes of the nation. “I am making efforts to serve the nation and my efforts in this direction will continue till my last breath,” said Jain.

Making a difference 

He was a founder member of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Jagadhri, established in 1954 and the founder secretary of DAV College for Girls, Yamunanagar, the first girls’ college in the region, in 1957.

The Legendary Zohra Sehgal: Success Story

Zohra Segal has received honours like the Padma Shri (1998), the Kalidas Samman (2001), and the Padma Vibhushan (2010).  Bollywood’s favourite dadi who craved for attention as she thought she was ugly.

Sahibzadi Zohra Begum Mumtaz-ullah Khan was born in a progressive, aristocratic Muslim family in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in 1912. Brought up in the age of purdah, Sehgal was sent to Lahore to pursue her higher education at Queen Mary College. Sehgal ended up at Mary Wigman’s school in Dresden, Germany, where she trained in Eurythmics.

In 1935, Sehgal joined Uday Shankar’s dance troupe in Japan, and even though she was rarely cast as the lead because of her unconventional features, she deeply invested in her dancing.

In 1942, Sehgal fell for Kameshwar Sehgal, who was eight years younger than her, and married him in Allahabad, one of the few places in pre-Independent India where a Hindu could marry a Muslim without either having to convert. Sehgal had two children, Kiran and Pavan.

Life in UK

In 1945, Sehgal became a dance director at Prithvi Theatre. She stayed on in that position till 1959, and around that time Kameshwar passed away.

In 1962, she got a theatre scholarship to the United Kingdom. She wouldn’t return to India until 1987. Initially, she studied theatre while living at a students’ hostel “like an eighteen-year-old”, according to her daughter’s memoir of her. Eventually, when Kiran and Pavan moved to London, she took up two jobs — dressing actors in a theatre and working at a store to make ends meet.

Career and acomplishments

Aside from mastering dance and theatre, Sehgal also made a foray into movies. She is internationally known for her roles in television series Dr. Who (1964-65) and the movie The Jewel in the Crown.

In 1993, Sehgal and her sister Uzra Butt starred in Shahid Nadeem’s popular play Ek Thi Nani. This role marked the start of her career as the loving, displaced grandmother always clamouring for a return to tradition. She then went on to star in various movies and TV shows as the quintessential grandmother — Bhaji on the Beach (1992), The Mystic Masseur (2001), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Dil Se (1998), Saawariya and Cheeni Kum (2007) and TV serials Tandoori Nights (1985–87) and Amma and Family (1996).

She was awarded the Padama Shri in 1998, Kalidas Samman in 2001 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement.

Death and tributes

In 2014, Sehgal was diagnosed with pneumonia and died due to a cardiac arrest on 10 July 2014.

One of the wealthiest people in India, Azim Premji is these days perhaps more known for his philanthropy than his wealth or business skills. As of Oct. 2019, Forbes reported Premji had a net worth of $7.2 billion. He derives his wealth from his ownership of Wipro Limited (WIT), an information technology (IT) company that ranks as India’s third-largest outsourcer of IT services. In this article, we review Premji’s rise as the owner of a small, family-run business to one of India’s most influential entrepreneurs.

Wipro’s Early Days

Wipro was started as Western Indian Vegetable Products Ltd. in 1945 by Mohamed Premji, father of Azim Premji, as a manufacturer of hydrogenated cooking fats. At the time, Premji’s father was already an established rice merchant. Azim Premji completed his schooling in Mumbai and was pursuing electrical engineering at Stanford University in the United States when in 1966 he had to leave and return to India due to his father’s sudden demise. He then became the chairman of Wipro at the young age of 21 amidst shareholder revolt. He expanded the company’s product line to include hydraulic cylinders, soaps, and lighting products, renaming the company Wipro in 1977.

Premji Enters Technology Sector

Wipro entered the IT space in 1980 after IBM had withdrawn from the country. The company started with manufacturing microcomputers under a technology-sharing agreement with U.S.-based Sentinel Computers. Later, it started providing software solutions to complement its hardware operations.

The 80s saw a series of ventures by Azim Premji and Wipro. He started a manufacturing plant for the production of hydraulic tipping systems in 1983, followed by an entry into the manufacturing of industrial cylinders and hydraulic cylinders. In 1989, Wipro formed a strategic joint venture with General Electric (GE) for the manufacture and distribution of imaging products called Wipro GE Medical Systems, which became a subsidiary of Wipro the following year.

Premji Diversifies and Grows Wipro

Following India’s economic deregulation in 1991, Wipro further diversified into the manufacturing of lamps, powders, oil-based natural ingredients, medical and diagnostic equipment, and IT hardware products such as printers and scanners. It also entered the IT services business in the 1990s and was among the first to experiment with offshore IT services.

In 1999, Wipro became the only Indian computer manufacturer to receive Y2K-compliant certification from the National Software Testing Laboratory in the U.S. It also entered into a joint venture with KPN to provide Internet services in India. The following year saw Wipro list in the U.S. via American Depositary Receipts and emerge as one of India’s largest software exporters and the second-largest listed company in India.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Wipro continued to perform well, with IT remaining its core business. It also opened a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) unit in 2002 and was one of the best-performing stocks during 1998-2003 on the Indian stock exchanges. Premji created a culture of striving for excellence in business operations, and Wipro was successful in implementing the objectives that were part of this culture and being one of the first software companies to get SEI Level 5 certification.

Wipro’s Corporate Structure

The exit in 2005 of chief executive officer (CEO) Vivek Paul, who played a key role in making Wipro a billion-dollar enterprise, led to Azim Premji becoming the CEO until 2008. This was followed by a change in corporate structure that led to the installation of joint CEOs until 2011 when there was a reversion in the company back to a single CEO.

The company added a chief operating officer (COO) post to support the CEO and look after day-to-day operations, product delivery, and customer satisfaction in order to allow the CEO to focus on global operations and future strategies. After the global financial crisis of 2008, the company’s revenue growth stagnated, forcing management to restructure its business model to find new business outside of the U.S. market and within its own domestic market.

Under Premji’s leadership, Wipro’s revenues grew from around $2 million in the late 1960s to around $7 billion in 2014, with IT contributing around 75% of total revenue. In July 2019, Azim Premji stepped down as the chairman of the board of Wipro and was succeeded by his son, Rishad. In its 2018-2019 annual report, the company reported annual revenue of $8.4 billion.

Azim Premji has his own family wealth management company, Premji Invest, that manages around $1 billion of his personal wealth and invests in public as well as private companies.

Premji Focuses on Philanthropy

One of the many reasons—perhaps the most significant—that Azim Premji will be remembered is for his philanthropy. He has already given away $21 billion of his wealth as part of the Giving Pledge, a commitment by the world’s wealthiest individuals to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes. Premji was the first Indian and only third non-American to make this pledge.

This includes two-thirds of his Wipro stock, which has been placed in a separate trust and will be used for educational purposes. The Azim Premji Foundation was set up as a non-profit organization in 2001 with the aim of improving primary education in India. It has also set up a university in Bengaluru, India, and works with schools and governments in various districts of India to improve education in a holistic way, rather than just through financing.

Something else that is noteworthy about Azim Premji is that he has managed to build an organization that has a reputation for being an ethical company committed to certain core values, and he has taken a keen interest in creating high-performance teams.

Finally in 2004, after 10 years of struggle, she got her first Bollywood project “I Love You Boss”. In the following year, she also auditioned for a film directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Mahesh Bhatt. Anurag Basu liked her audition a lot and wanted to get her in the film but Mahesh Bhatt did not agree. He stated that she is very young to handle such a demanding and hard role. So, they signed a more established actress over Kangana. However, at the very last moment, that actress walked out of the movie leaving Mahesh Bhatt and Anurag Basu in no other position but to sign Kangana Ranaut as her replacement. Kangana dropped “I Love You Boss” to do this film. She showed everyone that she was rightfully deserving of the role through her performance. The film was “Gangster”. As you may know, this movie was a hit in the box office and it also impressed the critiques. Kangana received a lot of praise for her performance in the movie.


After “Gangster”, Kangana did some more films. However, not all of them got a good response from the audience except for the “Tanu Weds Manu Series”. Her Bollywood career got stagnated in the middle. Suddenly, all this changed with “Queen”. The audience loved this film and loved the performance of Kangana in it. . She received two consecutive National Film Award for Best Actress for “The Queen”. Kangana told in an interview that “Queen” was the turning point in her Bollywood career. This film also changed a lot of people’s perception of her and her capabilities.

Now, Kangana  is also conquering the business world with her recent collaboration with Brand “Vero Moda” to launch two clothing lines for the company. From Star Plus’ romantic drama “Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil” to Nitesh Tiwari’s “Chhichhore”, characters played by Sushant Singh Rajput have always been larger than life. He was born in the capital city of Bihar, Patna. Sushant’s ‘Dhoni’ is the most loved role. In praise of his role in “MS Dhoni: The Untold Story”, Manoj Bajpai writes, “Every morning and evening he would religiously go out for his practice sessions with the former Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More. He played the role so well, the manner in which he imbibed the essence of Dhoni was impeccable.” In an interview, Sushant mentioned how he used to bunk his classes for watching Dhoni in India’s cricket matches. He added that he was a big fan which is also why he was able to play ‘Mahi’ with perfection.

Who knew that the man who starred in “Chhichhore”, a movie that beautifully dealt with battling suicidal thoughts was going through such thoughts himself? ‘Anni’ taught us that we are living the wrong way, not planning for when we fail and that we need to fight the thoughts which move us towards suicide. Complementing Sara Ali Khan in her debut movie “Kedarnath”, he performed a role which was one that he played with a massive heart. Sushant taught each of us to fight the failures in life, both as a human being and through the characters he played.

Just when we thought that this year can not get any worse, it takes a step further. Sushant, we will not only remember you as Anni or Dhoni but also as an artist, man who taught us to rise again when we fail and as a man who taught us that “loser” is a happy word. From 1986 to 2020, your life was too short to end now.

We had the privilege of being entertained by a man who said, “The biggest mystery in your life will be you. Forever. Period”.  We will forever remember him as an inspiration.

Dhirubhai Ambani – The Man Who Made Reliance Industries

A true rags-to-riches story, Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, has been undisputedly India’s most enterprising entrepreneur. Born in a gujarati family Dhirubai moved toYemen at the age of 16, where he worked as a dispatch clerk with A. Besse & Co.

After working in Dubai for sometime he later returned to India where he founded the Reliance Commercial Corporation with a meager capital of Rs. 15000. He set up the business in partnership with Champaklal Damani from whom he split in 1965.

Dhirubhai started his first textile mill at Naroda, near Ahmedabad and launched the brand “Vimal”. He later diversified into petrochemicals and sectors like Telecommunications, Information Technology, Energy, Power, Retail, Textiles, Capital Markets and Logistics.

He rose from humble beginnings to create India’s largest industrial empire, and in the process, became one of the world’s richest men. He rewrote India’s corporate history for which he was featured among the select Forbes billionaires list. He also figured in the Sunday Times list of top 50 businessmen in Asia.

Credited for starting the equity cult in India, Dhirubhai was praised for his key role in shaping India’s stock market culture by attracting hordes of retail investors to a market monopolized by state-run financial institutions.

He never followed the traditional way and was often targeted for his business strategies due to which he courted controversy all throughout his life. The ‘Dhirubhai school of management’ firmly believed that the only thing which mattered were the end results and the benefits which infiltrated directly to the shareholders.

He won many awards and accolades during his lifetime. In 2000, he was conferred the ‘Man of the Century’ award by Chemtech Foundation and Chemical Engineering World for his contribution to the growth and development of the chemical industry in India. In 1998, he was awarded the Dean’s Medal by The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, for setting an outstanding example of leadership. Dhirubhai Ambani was also named the “Man of 20th Century” by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

A perfect amalgamation of grit and determination, Dhirubai believed in his dreams and he lived it. He was of the belief “Dhirubhai will go one day. But Reliance’s employees and shareholders will keep it afloat. Reliance is now a concept in which the Ambanis have become irrelevant.”

In 1986 after a severe heart stroke he handed over Reliance Group to his sons Mukesh and Anil. After his death, the colossal corporate group was split into Reliance Industries, headed by Mukesh Ambani and Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG), led by Anil Ambani.

A visionary by birth, his life has been an inspiration for many and will serve as a beacon light for the generations to come.
