Who’ll make the World Cup semifinals?

Halfway through the group stage of the World Cup, Afghanistan and South Africa are out of the qualification race. India, New Zealand, England and Australia are at the top of the table as of now and it’s difficult to see more than one of these missing out on a semifinal slot.

That leaves Bangladesh, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – possibly in that order – fighting for a possible fourth place.

New Zeeland

New Zealand

Unbeaten so far, but have arguably the toughest back end among all teams. Definite chance of semifinal slot, but top 2 finish could prove a tough ask.

Have three of the current top four still to play, but barring a blip against Pakistan have been imperious. Almost certain to qualify, would be disappointed not to finish in top 2.

Barring a loss to India, have shown signs of their old dominating style. Still to come up against England and New Zeeland, but qualifying near certain. Top 2 finish no pipedream.

All wins, barring a washed out game so far. Would fancy their chances of winning most of the remaining games. Target will be to beat England and top the group stage.

Have punched above their presumed weight, but have three hurdles in India, Australia and Pakistan if they have to qualify for the semis. Outside chance.

Sri Lanka

A pale shadow of the world-beaters they once were. With India England still to play and a horrible NRR, they’ll have to win everything left to survive the group stage.

West Indies

Have imploded after an impressive start. Their unpredictability and a still decent NRR gives them an outside chance of qualifying, but will need to beat India, New Zealand to do that.

South Africa

Performed well below expectations so far. Have only pride to play for in the remaining three group games.

A win against England apart, haven’t looked the part. With a disastrous NRR, even winning the rest may not be enough to qualify.

Unsurprising bottom of the table. Qualification no longer a possibility, but still can play for bragging rights against India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Windies.

A round robin with several evenly matched teams and a few unpredictable ones is always a forecaster’s nightmare, but the rain factor at the Cup has made it more of a lottery. Windies can ill afford any more washouts while the others will hope if the weather does intervene it does so in games against tough rivals.

Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of World Cup 2019, Rishabh Pant in as replacement

Team India’s World Cup campaign suffered a major jolt on Wednesday as opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the tournament due to a thumb injury. Rishabh Pant has been brought in as a replacement of Shikhar Dhawan. The opener suffered a hairline fracture during his match-winning 117-run knock against Australia at The Oval on June 9.

“Shikhar Dhawan has a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal of his left hand. He will remain in cast until mid-July which rules him out of ICC World Cup. We have requested Rishab Pant as the replacement,” said Team India Manager Sunil Subramaniam.

In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul had opened India’s innings with Rohit Sharma against Pakistan. Rahul was impressive in that match scoring 57 and sharing a record 136-run stand for the 1st wicket.

India has had a great start to their World Cup campaign. They have won against South Africa, Australia, and Pakistan while the game against New Zealand was washed out. India faces Afghanistan next on June 22 before they take on West Indies, hosts England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

With six centuries, Shikhar Dhawan is one of India’s most prized assets in ICC tournament. He has scored three tons each in Champions Trophy and in World Cup. Along with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Dhawan forms a formidable top-3.

What perhaps prompted the team management to finally make an announce Dhawan’s injury was the fact that even Bhuvneshwar Kumar sustained an injury during the Pakistan match.

India would have had only 13 players to choose from against Afghanistan if Pant was not brought in as a replacement. Bhuvneshwar is out of three matches with a hamstring niggle.

“Bhuvneshwar is being assessed by team physio Patrick Farhart,” team’s trainer Shankar Basu said.

Rishabh Pant approved as a replacement player.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 has approved Rishabh Pant as a replacement player for Shikhar Dhawan in India’s squad for the remainder of the tournament, a statement from the global body said.

New Zealand vs South Africa Live Score, World Cup 2019: New Zealand Opt To Bowl vs South Africa In 49-Over Game

The toss in the World Cup match between New Zealand and South Africa in Birmingham on Wednesday was delayed due to a wet outfield after overnight rain. The umpires made an inspection and decided they would carry out another check at 11:00 am (1000 GMT). The pitch itself is uncovered and apparently dry but umpires Nigel Llong and Ian Gould said the Edgbaston outfield needed time to dry out. “It’s improving, they have done well, we are going to have another look at 11,” said Gould. “It’s the whole outfield that’s the problem, we have had so much rain. Hopefully we will get some cricket at some stage shortly.” South Africa must win the game if they are to stand a realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals after finally recording their first victory of the tournament, against Afghanistan.

Despite that nine-wicket victory, Faf du Plessis’s side are still languishing in eighth spot in the 10-team table after five games, with the top four qualifying for next month’s semis. After Wednesday’s game, they will face Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia. New Zealand, by contrast, are flying high and a fourth win would lift the 2015 finalists to the top of the table ahead of matches against West Indies, Pakistan, Australia and hosts England. Wet weather has caused major disruption at the World Cup, with four no results in which teams shared a point each.
